Joseph Adams Eve, M.D. was one of the founding faculty members of the Medical College of Georgia. He first studied medicine in Augusta, Georgia as a student of Dr. Milton Antony before he enrolled in the Medical College of South Carolina and obtained his medical doctorate from there in 1828. (Today known as the MUSC.) Dr. Eve first taught materia medica and therapeutics before becoming the professor of obstetrics and diseases of women and children after the death of Dr. Antony in 1839. He held this professorship until a few months before his death in 1886. These two notebooks present a mystery. They appear to have belonged to Dr. Eve as his name is written throughout, particularly on the first few and the last few pages and are dated 1843 and 1844 respectively on the beginning pages, although other dates appear throughout the notebooks. Early in the notebooks (and mid-way in the 1843 book) the writer indicates which course of lectures the notes are taken – Dr. Lewis D. Ford’s practice of medicine class; Dr. Means’ chemistry class; and Dr. George Newton’s anatomy class. Other names that have been identified as graduates of the Medical College of Georgia also appear on various pages of the notebooks, including the front pages. G.H. Holcombe (Class of 1855) and Thomas Burdell (Class of 1856) appear in the 1843 book. Hamilton R. Pierce (Class of 1849) appears in the 1844 book. The last few pages of the 1844 book contain lists of names belonging to the various classes in the 1850s. The format of the notes is mostly question and answer.en_US
