dc.description.abstractThis study observes the effects of diabetic retinopathy (DR) within streptozotocin (STZ) mice and examines how the retina’s structure and function are compromised. In order to perform a more detailed evaluation of the retina, four different testing modalities were used to look at various parts of the retina. The main focus of the study is to directly compare the four different methods in order to determine which test is best at discerning retinal changes. The four methods used were conventional electroretinography (ERG), pattern electroretinography (PERG), scotopic threshold response (STR), and the optomotor response (Optomotry). The ERG assesses outer retinal function, the PERG assesses the ganglion cells in the inner retina, the STRs evaluate inner retinal function, and the Optomotry observes reflexive behavior based primarily on inner retinal function. The results indicate that the negative scotopic threshold response (nSTR) is sensitively and specifically affected by diabetes induced by STZ, with conventional ERG measures not strongly affected.en_US
