dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship . between the perception of uncertainty and the coping methods of patients with the diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS. The ~onceptual framework used as the basis for this study was the Uncertainty in Illness Theory. Major study variables and measures were uncertainty, measured by the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale, and coping, measured by the Jalowiec Coping Scale. The convenience sample of this study i.ncluded fifty subjects with a diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS. · There were Jew significant relationships found between the variables of uncertainty and ~he coping methods found in .the Jalowiec Coping Scale. The study, however, did show a relationship between the effectiveness of coping efforts and the degree of subjects participation . in religious activities. The coping strategy most often used and the one that was most effective was the use of optimism related to their disease. The increased religious activity may be the foundation for their optimism. Recommendations for future nursing . research were made. | en_US |
