Y WITHIN ADEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT IS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION ADDRESSED BY BOTH JUDITH BUTLER AND GIORGIO AGAMBEN. BOTH OF THESE PHILOSOPHERS DISCUSS HOW THE SOVEREIGN CHARACTER OF A GOVERNMENT CAN AFFECT LAW, BARE LIFE, AND THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO. THENATURE OF LAW AND BARE LIFE ARE INTERTWINED IN REGARDS TO EACH OF THEIR RELATION BACK TO THE SOVEREIGN PARADOX, A CONCEPT INTRODUCED BY AGAMBEN. JUDITH BUTLER ADDRESSES THESE CONCERNS IN RELATION TO THE CONCEPT OF INDEFINITE DETENTION WHICH IS RELEVANT INAMERICAN POLITICAL SOCIETY TODAY. JUDITHBUTLER ADDRESSES BOTH THE TOPIC OF INDEFINITE DETENTION BUT ALSO HOW SOVEREIGNTY WITHIN A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT CAN BE DANGEROUS. HER CONCEPT OF GOVERNMENTALITY REFINES AGAMBEN'S PHILOSOPHIES AND PLACES A WIDER EMPHASIS ON THE POTENTIALOF BARE LIFE.
